Tens Treatment for Back Pain
In our day to day life, we
all encounter muscular pain due to some reason or the other. It could be
sports, bad posture, long working hours, age, or an accident. Muscular pain can
be very unnerving as its hampers normal movement. But the most problematic of
all is a nasty back pain which obstructs everything from sitting, standing,
bending and waking.
There are many kinds of
treatments prescribed by the doctors for back pain. There are ointments, gels,
sprays, tablets, massage, etc. which claim to give relief from pain. The latest
development in this field is the heat treatment through gentle and safe
electric devices. This is called the TENS treatment or Transcutaneous
Electrical Nerve Stimulation treatment which works on muscular pains and stiff
joints. TENS is a drug free therapy. It does not involve any kind of medicine.
It applies the technique of electric nerve stimulation to give relief from
pain.
TENS
treatment for back pain massages the affected area gently through soft pulses which
gives relief from pain and stiffness. There are two methods of using the TENS
treatment – the Standard High Frequency Treatment and Low Frequency Treatment.
In the Standard High Frequency treatment, the electric signal produced blocks
the pain signal sent by the body to the brain. The pulse signal is stronger
than the signal of the body which makes it work effectively in blocking the
body signal. The pulse rate of the TENS device is set to 60 pulses per second
or more as may be needed. When switched on, it produces a buzz sound and a
tingling feeling between the electrodes. Such treatment is ideal for acute
pains.
In the Low Frequency Treatment, the pulse rate
is set to 10 pulses per second. It produces muscle twitching and a pulsating
feeling. As a result of this external stimulus, the body reacts by releasing
the pain killing chemical called Endorphin which acts as a chemical nerve
block. In this way the body’s signal to the rain is blocked. This treatment is
effective in cases of chronic pain, stiffness and occasional numbness.
TENS treatment devices come
in many specifications to suit different requirements. You can log on to the
internet and find the one most suitable for you.
